Have you considered something simple, like a layered fruit dessert with some whipped cream? If you put it in a trifle bowl, it would combine low calorie and taste and look beautiful.

I love KIMCHI! In fact every month I have to buy a large jar of it from my local Korean grocer. They make it homemade. They also have cucumber and radish kimchee besides the cabbage. It's great for my diabetes as well. All vegetable, low glycemic value and tastes great with brown rice or Uncle Ben's converted rice. Hey I need a recipe for kimchee can I use yours for the http://diabeticcookbookblog.com/recipe-archive/

Has anyone every been to Hawaii and tried the Punalu'u Sweet bread?
A fresh loaf is quite frankly to die for. And so me being back on mainland,
I either have to synthesize it of find a vendor.

My Grandmother was a full blooded Portuguese born and raised on the big island of Hawaii... whatever kind of bread, it's all the same to me...

Try 1 less egg and 1 cup more flour, see if that doesn't dry it up some. Also we add a grated potato and only 1 package of yeast. Nutmeg is optional. More butter, less sugar.

Malasadas are a yeast doughnut of Portuguese origins. Brought to Oahu in 1952 by a portuguese baker named Leonard Fiego and his wife Margaret. Even though it is very popular in Hawaii, the "Hawaiian Doughnuts" are the EXACT "Original Portugese Malasadas" that the Fiego''s brought to the islands - These are Portugese, NOT Hawaiian.

Yeah, I learned the hard way about temperatures and yeast. It helps if you have a thermometer, which unfortunately I don't have. :( Oh well, I've been doing okay. Only managed to kill the yeast once. ;-) Keep at it, and remember to have fun along the way.

Thank you for visiting my blog. I don't know why people don't like duck. It's so totally awesome!!

This is a great recipe and reminds me of Chinese steamed chicken, which is served with green onions, garlic, and ginger that have been fried for a few seconds in oil. Eating this with a hot bowl of steamed rice... yum!

I haven't tried your recipe, but I do want to clarify one thing -- this was orginally Portuguese sweetbread - not Hawaii Sweet bread. As usual, along with the ukelele, the Hawaiian stole this too.

When I grew up in Hawaii there was a bakery that made Mary's Portuguese Sweet Bread. As kids, we sold it for all of our money making functions. Since I an a third generation Portuguese American, I know that the ukelele which is the Hawaiian name for jumping flea was a Portuguese instrument as was Portuguese sweetbread. It's a great bread no matter what the name but it is from Portuguese ancestry.

HAWAIIAN SWEET BREAD RECIPE

1/3 cup warm water (95-110 degrees)
2 pkg fleishmann’s dry active yeast
1/3 cup evaporated milk
1 ¼ cups sugar, divided
4 cups flour
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp salt
½ stick butter
3 eggs
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Hi Donna, the dough should be a bit sticky but your came out wet, hmmmmmm. 1/3 cup water with the yeast, 1/3 cup evaporated milk, 1/2 stick of butter, 1/2 tsp of lemon and vanilla extract and 3 beatened eggs added to 4 cups of flour and one cup of sugar? you got me stumped! i just made a batch today. it is the second batch this week, hmmmm. the only thing i can think of is too much of one of the wet ingredients was added.
but yeah try adding a extra cup of flour, slowly,1/2 cup at a time, mix and add a little bit more if needed. thats what i would do,if my dough was too wet. let me know how it comes out, remember my goal is to get you eating your own Hawaiian Sweet Bread! can you say good eats!

Hi

I tried mxing the dough according to your ingredients stated but the dough turned out watery with 4cups of flour and i cant even form a dough like the usual bread dough. Do uo think the amount of flour should be increased?

Please advise.

I love Kimchi! I used to have a Korean friend who fed me when I was too broke to buy food and she got me hooked on this dish . . . the first few times I nearly burned out my throat, but then got used to it. Thanks for the recipes!

Racheal, I just posted the recipes, sorry, i got a bit lazy, it took me a day to get it up and posted. lol, sorry for making you miss Hawaii all over again. Ever heard of this saying; "home is where the wok is" ? By the way, just out of curiousity, which Hawaiian foods do you miss the most? Just curious.
