SAM CHOY’S ISLAND FLAVORS COOKBOOK
Out of my grandmother’s kitchen, so old that the table and cabinet were hand-made out of wood, with fragrances of Hawaiian flowers breezing through the screened double doors, came the most amazing Hawaiian food recipes. This is my Norman Rockwell moment, Hawaiian style.
Her cooking is my standard bearer, the flavors of her cooking are my goal, the memories she left me with is the memories I want to create.
Regrets, we all have them, don’t we? Mine is not realizing that one day her cooking, her knowledge of Hawaiian food recipes would be missed. Sure some of her Hawaiian recipes have survived the passing of time, but she also had a heck of a lot more to offer.
People ask, “Who’s my favorite Chef?” My answer is always, Chef Sam Choy! Unequivocally, there’s no one else like him, he is a natural with 3 generation of serving delicious Hawaiian food in his family. His series of Hawaiian Cookbooks are fantastic, especially his “Island Flavors” cookbook!
This island boy, Chef Sam Choy brings back vivid memories of my younger days, sitting at my grandmother’s table, a perfect Hawaiian day ending right outside of the kitchen window, and me enjoying her fabulous down-home cooking.
A kitchen filled with love, with good Hawaiian food. Oh Boy, let me tell you, “I never had to be called twice to any of her meals!”
